Project:Breakfast Room Addition & Kitchen Renovation
Location:Webster Groves, M0
Year Completed:2006
Contractor:PK Construction
Square Footage:299

Description:

Goals & Needs: Program:

  • Kitchen addition/renovation to a brick English Tudor style house built in 1932, with an adjacent addition built in 1989, as designed by Laura Neri Baebler, Architect.
  • Match the existing house style and materials.
  • Open the cramped, internal kitchen and breakfast room.  Improve circulation to the back entry and to the dining room. Preserve the existing stained glass doors in their location to the dining room.
  • A brick and wrought iron garden wall in keeping with the house design.
Challenge:
  • Very limited expansion possibilities due to surrounding constraints.
  • Creating stop and go spaces in a tight area without people bumping into one another.
  • Fitting all the different functions in a small area without clutter.
  • Appliances in conflict locations with circulation.
  • De-cluttering a very busy area of the house including a cramped breakfast room that serves also as an exterior entrance/exit to the driveway.
Concept Solution:
  • Allude to more space by borrowing views both inside and outside
  • Created a breakfast area that is continuous with the kitchen, yet defined by an alcove for a more spacious feeling with out loosing a sense of place.
  • Define the breakfast area with a large floor to ceiling bay window with transoms bringing in abundant eastern morning light and borrowing a beautiful view of the neighbor’s expansive azalea garden.
  • For more efficient space, and to de-clutter the appearance, 2 large cast iron radiators were replaced with low profile heaters
  • Expand the view to the back yard with a larger entrance/exit to the driveway via a new pair of French doors
  • Separate entry function with a desk counter and tall cabinets in the small addition. This provides a drop space for family members, lap top computer recharge station and an adjacent coat deposit upon entry.
  • Continuity and larger kitchen appearance is achieved by wrapping the cabinets around a corner.
  • A dramatic, enlarged and widened archway eases passage, between the kitchen and the main hallway to the family room.
Supporting Design Features
  • A steep roof line, herringbone brick pattern, and Tudor style timbering was designed to complement existing gables.
  • In lieu of slate roofing, an imitation heavy duty plastic tile virtually matches the existing slate roof and was used for economy of cost and to lighten the structure.
  • The brick exterior matches the existing brick in color, pattern, and mortar joint tooling for a seamless blend of old and new.
  • New brick garden wall with wrought iron details wall along the driveway and the iron gate design matches the gate to the yard and pool
  • The two original swinging doors into the dining room with stained glass inserts were preserved in the new layout.
